New yak transport
« on: February 01, 2008, 12:42:44 pm »
Sadly, I traded in the FJ cruiser for a 08 scion xb.  (the toaster with wheels)  I needed the cheaper payment/gas/insurance.

Is there anyone out there that could recommend a manufacturer for a roof rack for the scion?  Also, is it unsafe to transport a kayak on the roof without bow/stern tie downs?  I didn't do it on the FJ because the roof rack was real sturdy, and I could attach a strap at 6 scupper holes and one strap all the way around the yak.  It wasn't going anywhere.

I would appreciate any advice.

Hey sumo, how'd you get the yak on top of the FJ?  must be pretty tall to get it up there with ease and without dinging the vehicle?
Searching for fish I am.
Eat them I will.

I just picked it up and propped it against the rear of the roof rack, almost vertical.  Then I just picked up the back of the kayak and slid it accross the pads.  Not too hard when on level ground.  When on an incline like boat launch, I would sometimes park the FJ pointing downhill so the kayak slid into place easier from the back.  The kayak never comes in contact with the body, it only touched the roof rack.

I use bow & stern tie downs.  It provides great peace of mind when I'm cruising down the highway at 70 mph.  I figure that if the tie down is attached, the yak is still on top.

That said there are many that don't use them.  And there have been some terrific (depending on your perspective) stories shared here of those that didn't use them that should have.

Yes; do tie the bow and stern.
