When I was a kid, I filled a bunch of balloons with hydrogen and attached notes to them. A hunter found one of them over 100 miles from my house and sent me a letter.

When I was a kid, I filled a bunch of balloons with hydrogen and attached notes to them. A hunter found one of them over 100 miles from my house and sent me a letter.

I did something similar as a kid. Growing up on a farm we had natural gas lines in the chicken houses, for heaters. One day at the store I bought an expensive 25 cent super-balloon, and tried to fill it with gas. The line pressure was so low it wouldn't inflate. So I blew up the balloon manually, almost passing out (it was over 24" diam.). That stretched the balloon out enough to be inflated with the gas line. I then wrote a note with a self addressed stamped envelope and let it go one summer day. Around 2 weeks later I received  a very nice letter from a family who found it floating in their yard. It had gone around 40miles over the local hills into the next county. I'm glad they weren't smokers!

It's amazing we survived past childhood!
