Aquahunters Report: January 6
« on: January 06, 2008, 10:08:07 pm »
Aloha friends,

Back at it again in the New Year. Went out on a crystal clear morning. We had some whale encounters and some good fishing. Concentrated on some bottom fishg and bait drifting. It turned out to be pretty successful. 2 8lb ukus, 1 amberjack, and a 14lb white ulua. Small kine, Rocket

We went out on the East side and tried to find a Tuna or Mahi. Though after today Corbin and I may be banned from posting as Aquahunters, though our lack of fish was not due to not paddling far enough.  We met up at Kailua boat launch and hit the water at 0700.  We paddled about 12 miles round trip. No fish, but it was a great paddle.  Conditions were great and the wind actually calmed down during the middle of the day.  Water temp was 74-75 all day and we had a large amount of whales in the area.  We trolled Opelu and Ballyhoo for most of the day and Chris did troll some skirted lures from his handlines. First we headed out to the weather buoy. They were starting to doubt my navigation ability until Drew spotted it.  We dropped palu and drifted past it, but nothing showed up on the fishfinders, and no bites.  After about a half hour we trolled towards Mokumanu.  Most of this leg was 50-40 fathoms, but apart of it was over 400 feet deep.  when we got close to the Marine Corps Base we did mark a couple of fish, but we got only two bite.  One looked like a shark or Barracuda after looking at the bait and the second was an Aha based on marks, but no hookup.  Overall great paddle, but no luck.

Always a pleasure seeing these posts from the island, Rocket.
Fantastic!

I love the last "insert photo shopped fish here" pic. Next time I catch nothing I'll need to take one of those.
